I just read the 8th circuit opinion and there is no mention of the sovereignty issues. Assuming the Indian nation makes a reasonable decision, I don’t see that the US government can legally interfere if the Indian nation is truly a sovereign entity. I guess the Indian nation is not a sovereign entity legally — that is just window dressing. Assuming the Indian nation is not a sovereign entity, then the legal standard should be that if the Indian nation is acting reasonably, then there can be no interference. If the Indian nation wanted to grown poppy seeds and make heroin for distribution to the US, as a matter of policy the US should be able to do something about it. But again if what is going on is a reasonable decision about land usage, there should be no interference even if the CSA says this is growing marijuana.

Standing Silent Nation is absolutely the best movie this side and the other side of the Mississippi river. Congratulations Courtney and Surree, I am so proud of the two of you. All your efforts have paid off. POV, NY Times, next thing you know you will both be on Oprah. Love you!

Good film. Thanks for making public this absurd situation. There needs to be a concentrated effort to change the invisibility of native people that exists in the mainstream media.

This film was beautiful and thought-provoking. The well-timed shots of the landscape conveyed the Lakota’s love and respect for the land. Their one-ness with the land, both historical and spiritual, should be evidence enough of their right to produce industrial hemp. But why would the U.S. government want to respect their history and spirituality, let alone their legal sovereignty, when such respect could lead to economic prosperity and, perhaps, social uprising? The U.S. government doesn’t even care about the health and well-being of its white majority citizenry (as seen in Michael Moore’s Sicko). As I watched Standing Silent Nation, I couldnt help but draw parallels between the documentaries. Both films seem to present a choice, without stating it bluntly: we have to vote in politicians who actually care about us our most basic need (the need to maintain our pocketbooks so that we can buy food, shelter, clothing, AND medicine easily). It would be nice to able to say that this country has lost its way, but I dont think it ever found the right way to begin with. Thanks to Courtney, Surree, and, most of all, the White Plume family for sharing such a powerful story.

Thanks to everyone who watched the broadcast! Mine was an outdoor experience with a battle between lightening and fireworks- and then the movie in between. Just lovely.

As we celebrate the 4th of July, let’s ponder deeper questions of freedom and sovereignty.
